The original Madonna and Child is sited in Lapworth Church. Pangaea was approached by the estate of A J Poole to make a replica – reduced in size to 1 metre, from 1.3 metre tall – for installation in St Edmund’s School, Canterbury. The original Hopton Wood limestone sculpture was digitally 3d scanned in situ with an EinScan HX handheld scanner. This scanner can be used for a wide range of object sizes from 300mm to 3m to create replicas, models, or kept as digital files, with up to 0.05mm accuracy. A 1:1 maquette was then SLA 3d printed. This, along with photos, was used used to hand carve the copy. As the Hopton Wood quarry is now closed, a similar substitute stone was sourced, Purbeck.
